On Thursday, Mr. Lewis came with his cameras to photograph the corps
rehearsing. Though we warned him about getting too close to the color
guard with flags and weapons flying, Mr. Lewis wasn't going to let
anything get in his way of getting this shot. Ms. Cindy Santos from The Press Enterprise Multi-Media came to video the corps at RCC. You can see her video clip here.

In true Yamato tradition, the members raved about
the food prepared by our volunteers which included Mr. Rick Alvarado, Mrs.
Nadine Douglas and her son Kevin and another mother and son, whose name escapes
me. Some even said, "this food is better than what I eat at home!" The menu was
diverse, wholesome, nutritional and flavorful. Friday's snack was our tradition
"VK Dogs" (hot dogs simmered in BBQ Sauce, seasoning & Grape Jelly), Shell
'N Cheese, rice and chocolate pudding.  Breakfast included assorted cereals;
pancakes and sausage; scrambled eggs with bacon and hash browns; French Toast
and bacon. Lunch was hamburgers and hot dogs; a deli buffet, and spaghetti with
meatballs. Saturday and Sunday dinner included grilled marinated chicken; pork
and vegetable stir-fry, broccoli beef and rice. Saturday's snack was Penne
pasta with spaghetti sauce and Sunday's snack was a burrito bar.

Preparing these meals also allowed us to gauge on
how much the kids eat, what they like or don't like and if we needed to control
how much food an individual gets. With certain menus, it will be necessary to
have a support staff serve the kids. With others, we can let the kids take as
much as they want. We also learned it would be necessary to have the kids wait
until everyone was at the food line before serving. We will be experimenting
with some new menus at the June camp. The challenge for this season is to stay within the budget but maintain the quality of food.

Overall, we had a great camp. No major injuries
other an a minor spained ankle. We did have one member go home on Monday
because he was sick. By Monday evening, the corps marched and played the opener, ballad and
the closer up to the percussion feature leaving just another minute and a half
of drill to learn. Over the next couple of weeks leading up to our June camp,
the corps will be putting the rest of the show on the field. By the end of the
June camp, we should be able to march and play the entire show.

On Sunday, May 11th, Yamato hosted its very first gathering of its members and their families at their Mother's Day Picnic. Nearly 90 family plus corps members attended an afternoon of great food and entainment to honor their mothers and grand mothers who do so much. May 11th was also the organization's evaluation day by Drum Corps International, represented by Mr. Tom Hope, to be reinstated as a member of DCI for the 2008 season.

The morning began with a 3 hour rehearsal for the corps to review the opener drill which much of it was put on the field in less than three 4-hour rehearsal blocks starting the previous weekend. Inspite of missing several members due to Prom on Saturday and suffering from lack of sleep, the kids did an amazing job!

The afternoon began as parents and family members arrived at Valley View High School where members of the board of directors and corps director, Edward Martin, welcomed everyone with a short welcome announcement, followed by a lunch buffet and a performnace by the hornline. "Hats off to the support team for their semi-home made, specialed, salads we served," said Board President, Cary Weinstien.
"They were a MAJOR hit. I heard comments from parents where they said if this
is how well the kids will eat we aren't worried"

Following the performance, drum majors Casey Bindl and Donnaly Natividad recited their favorite Mother's Day poems and were first to present their Mothers with a beaufitul single-stem Carnation. Corps Director, Ed Martin then invited the members to come and get their flower to present to their mothers. "It was quite an emotional experience," said director Edward Martin. "Its been nearly 35 years since I celebrated Mother's Day with my mother."

As the mom's received their flowers, the drumline assembled in the courtyard and prepared to escort family members to the rehearsal field playing the cadence "Yoi ko no March" written by Naoki Ishikawa. As the battery begain playing, family members followed the drumline to witness the debut performance of Yamato's 2008 production, "Mythos."

"On the starting line," began the announcement by corps director, Edward Martin, "From Moreno Valley/Riverside, California and Kyoto, Japan please welcome the 2008 YAMATO Drum and Bugle Corps!" 46 members performed portion of the opener for DCI Evaluator, Tom Hope. "The corps has an execellent reputation," said Tom Hope after the performance. "I am comfortable with what the organization is doing and I will recommend Yamato be allowed to compete and tour this season. I look forward to seeing them on the field this season."

He plans on attending Riverside Community College for two years then transferring to Cal State Fullerton to pursue a doctorate in musical education and composition or as a bassoon performance major. When he is not practicing for the different groups he performs with or for solo competitions Casey enjoys writing music for small ensembles or solo bassoon pieces also when he gets a chance he likes to go kayaking, biking or hiking with his friends. “I know my drive to do the best I can and help others around me do the same will take yamato to new heights. This group of performers with the help of the new instructional staff and my self is going to make a huge impact on the drum corps world with Yamato's big return this 2008 season."

She was born and raised in Chino Hills, California with her older sister, who marched Yamato as well. After graduating with honors from Chino Hills High School in June 2008,
she plans to attend either UCLA or UCI, where she will double major in psychology and media studies. When not sharpening her conducting skills or studying hard, she enjoys all kinds of dancing, singing, and spending quality time with her friends and family. One day, she hopes to travel the world, but for now she'll be satisfied touring the United States with her fellow members. She is "definitely excited to meet new people, overcome cultural barriers, and help the corps put together a successful production that surpasses everyone's expectations. "Donnaly sincerely hopes 2008 brings an unforgettable drum crops season for everyone--members, staff, and spectators alike."
